It was the fourth Artificial satellite in the earth's orbit after Sputnik 1, Sputnik2, Explorers1. It was an American satellite. Satellite lost its contact with the headquarters in 1964 but till today it is orbiting Earth.

Purpose of launching - It was launched for testing a three-stage launching vehicle and the effects of space environment on the satellite along with the effects of Earth's orbit.
